Trump Reveals Putin Agrees Not to Attack Ukraine for a Week During Extreme Cold
According to a BBC report on January 30th, US President Donald Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed not to attack Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and other cities for one week due to unusually extreme cold weather.
Although Russia has not yet confirmed this agreement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Trump's announcement and expressed hope that Russia would keep its promise. Trump did not specify when the ceasefire would begin, but predicted that temperatures in Ukraine's capital would drop rapidly, potentially reaching -24 degrees Celsius in the coming days.
Trump mentioned during a televised cabinet meeting in Washington, D.C. that he personally requested Putin not to strike Kyiv and other cities for a week, and Putin agreed. "It's very good," Trump said. He added that Ukrainians could hardly believe it but were very happy because they have been suffering tremendously.
Zelensky posted on social media that Trump made an important statement about the possibility of ensuring safety for Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities during this winter. "Our team discussed this in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). We expect the agreement to be implemented," he said.
The week prior, negotiation teams from Russia, Ukraine, and the US met in the UAE for their first trilateral talks since the war began. While all parties described the negotiations as constructive, no announcement was made about Russia agreeing to suspend attacks during the winter.
Meanwhile, attacks continue, impacting electricity systems in major Ukrainian cities and forcing millions of people to live under extremely difficult cold conditions.
